Jim Kelly threw three touchdown passes and Sam Harrell and James Hadnot each scored via the ground to give the Houston Gamblers a 49-30 triumph over the Baltimore Stars in Sunday afternoon USFL action.
Kelly hit slot-receiver Richard Johnson on passes of 6 and 13 yards and Gerald Mcneil scored via a 25-yarder as Houston remained undefeated improving their record to (5-0).
Kelly finished with 250 passing yards on 25-of-31 efficiency with no interceptions and two sacks.
Chuck Fusina, the Stars' veteran starter, finished with 264 yards on 18-of-28 with two touchdowns but was sacked six times in the contest. He also ran for two touchdowns.
Houston stung the Baltimore in the first quarter with some fierce hitting and opened the scoring on a 73-yard touchdown march, capped by Jim Kelly’s 27-yard touchdown scamper.
The Stars closed to within 14-10, but the Kelly to McNeil touchdown was followed by a McNeil 58-yard punt return to close out the first half as Houston took a 28-10 lead into the intermission.
In the third stanza Houston quickly assumed command,as James Hadnot scored on an 18-yard run and then a Kelly to Johnson 13-yard touchdown blew the game open as the Gamblers then cruised to victory.
Also on Sunday, the (2-3) Breakers turned to backup quarterback Robbie Mahfouz who tossed a pair of touchdowns to go along with 170 yards rushing by Buford Jordan as New Orleans downed Oakland by a score of 28-20 as the Invaders remain winless at (0-5).
