'86 Chronology-Decision Time

Event Date: March 30th, 1986

Event Description: Culverhouse Demands Decision

Source: UPI

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Hugh Culverhouse will reduce his contract offer to Bo Jackson if Jackson has not decided by Monday whether to play pro football or baseball, The Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Jackson, who excelled in both sports at Auburn, was the first choice in the National Football League draft. His USFL rights are held by the Birmingham Stallions who have also been negotiating with Jacksons’ agent. He was selected in the fourth round of the major league amateur baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals.

He won the 1985 Heisman Trophy as a running back.

Asked what he would do if Jackson had not reached a decision by his deadline, Culverhouse said, “We will continue negotiating, of course. But things would change.”

Culverhouse said the day the Bucs drafted Jackson that he would make him “the richest rookie in NFL history.”

“I'm still willing to do that,” Culverhouse said outside the courtroom.

A representative of the law firm in Mobile, Alabama representing Jackson said the firm had no plans for an announcement concerning Jackson's intentions “at this time.”

Culverhouse would not say whether a formal offer had been made by the Bucs, who talked with Jackson's agents during the weekend in Tampa.

It is believed the Bucs have made some kind of offer to Jackson. Asked the status of the negotiations, Culverhouse said, “We're closer.”

The Royals also have been negotiating with Jackson, an outfielder. It is doubtful the Royals would pay Jackson a million dollars a year.

Asked if the Bucs would top any offer made by the Royals, Culverhouse said, “Hell yes.”

'86 Chronology-Barbarians at the Gate

Event Date: March 30th, 1986

Event Description: NFL Under Attack

Source: UPI

The National Football League is suffering antitrust attacks from within and without -- from the three-year-old United States Football League and from some of its own member owners.

Two USFL teams, the Oakland Invaders and Baltimore Stars, have filed a pair of anti-trust lawsuits claiming the NFL has tried to harm them economically.

Those cases have now been combined into one and are tentatively scheduled to begin trial April 18th in U.S. District Court in Manhattan but probably will be pushed back into May.

On another antitrust issue, the NFL has been sued for a second time by a team owner challenging the league's requirement that three-fourths of the 28 member teams must approve an owner's plan to relocate his club outside of its home territory.

The NFL is already facing some $70 million in damages, interest and fees awarded in 1983 when Raiders' owner Al Davis -- who moved his team after 13 seasons from Oakland, Calif., to Los Angeles without league approval -- successfully argued the same rule was an illegal restraint of trade. The league is appealing the damages amount and has not yet paid the penalty.

St. Louis owner Bill Bidwell claimed in a suit filed Feb. 11 that NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle threatened to sue the Cardinals if they moved out of Busch Stadium, a facility the owner has complained is too small. Bidwell reportedly has been considering moving to Phoenix or New York City.

Since last spring Rozelle has vigorously supported legislation before Congress that would grant various sports leagues an exemption from the antitrust laws to allow the league to regulate team movements, new ownership and, as the NFL does now, share its broadcast revenues.

Depending on whether their states are seeking to attract a pro team or trying to keep one they have at home, elected officials have vigorously debated various proposals but have yet to adopt a solution.

Sen. Albert Gore of Tennessee, where Memphis would love to have an NFL team, tried to get Rozelle to commit last year to adding six teams in exchange for advancing the league's preferred bill, but Rozelle refused. The bill is tentatively scheduled to come up for a vote in the Senate in May and, if passed, must still be approved by the House of Representatives.

Memphis is home of one of the most successful USFL franchises, and the Showboats are one of 16 current or former USFL clubs which have sued the NFL and 27 of its 28 teams -- the Raiders were omitted.

The suit contends that NFL owners began their monopoly effort in the 1950s, restricting the number of franchises to “limit the shares, and consequent dilution, of their revenues.” The 1960s saw the rise and eventual merger of the only successful competing pro football league, the American Football League, and in the 1970s, NFL clubs strengthened their monopoly “by increasing their control over virtually every facet of the business,” according to the USFL's court papers.

After attorneys for the two parties had taken dozens of depositions of potential witnesses during the fall of last year, rumors began circulating that the case would be settled with an agreement to merge three or four of the strongest USFL franchises into the NFL.

“Merger talks have been held at the instigation, always, of the U.S. Football League,” Rozelle said last month at his annual news conference before the Super Bowl. “In all cases it came from their side. There are not any continuing discussions, none at this time, between any representatives of two leagues involving merger.”

'86 Chronology-No Comment

Event Date: March 29th, 1986

Event Description: Sklar Refutes Report

Source: Football News

Spokesmen for Auburn star running back Bo Jackson and the Birmingham Stallions of the U.S. Football League refused comment on a published report that he has agreed to play for the team.

The Stallions, have reportedly offered Jackson a $1 million bonus, and a $1 million dollar salary to play for the team for the remainder of the USFL season.

Jerry Sklar, team president and spokesman for the team, said in a telephone interview refused to comment on a story published Friday in The Tuscaloosa News.

Sklar said in a telephone interview he doesn't respond to the kind of unidentified sources quoted in article. “We just don't operate that way,” he said.

The News quoted an unidentified source as saying: “Basically, the deal is done except for dotting some I's and crossing a few T’s.”

Jackson’s baseball rights are owned by the Kansas City Royals. Jackson was also kicked off the Auburn baseball team for flying to Tampa to take a physical for the Buccaneers.

Buck Belue, again filling in for an injured Ed Luther, threw two touchdowns, including a 17-yarder to Alton Alexis late in the fourth quarter Friday night, lifting the Bulls to a 30-27 victory over the Baltimore Stars, who suffered their fourth defeat in six contests.

Belue also connected on a 24-yard scoring pass to Frank Lockett that highlighted the Bulls’ third win of the season.

The Stars’ Chuck Fusina used his veteran receivers to rip the Bulls' secondary for three touchdown passes, but he also suffered three sacks on 23-of-37 efficiency for 254 yards passing.

Fusina's final touchdown pass of the night, a 13-yard effort to Clarence Collins, gave Baltimore a 24-19 late in the third quarter, but only served to set the stage for Belue, who three weeks ago led the Bulls to a 35-31 win at New Orleans.

In other Friday night action, the (5-1) Michigan Panthers continued their winning ways by edging the winless Invaders by a score of 23-22.

Backup Mike Hohensee tossed the winning touchdown to Eric Truvillion with 4:31 left in the contest. Hohensee replaced an injured Bob Gagliano in the third quarter and finished with 101 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

'86 Chronology-Lost

Event Date: March 26th, 1986

Event Description: Jackson Remains Undecided

Source: UPI

Auburn's Bo Jackson, still weighing offers from football's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Birmingham Stallions and baseball's Kansas City Royals, admitted Tuesday he was still “lost” in deciding which sport to play.

“To make a long story short, I'm lost,” said Jackson, the top pick in the NFL draft and a fourth-round selection in baseball's amateur draft.

“I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm just taking it one day at a time.”

Jackson, who won the Heisman Trophy after rushing for 1,786 yards last football season, said he would make a decision about his future soon, possibly this week. He gave no specific date.

“If I could work it out in some way, I would play both baseball and football,” Jackson said. “I would love to, but I don't think that's possible.”

Buccaneers owner Hugh Culverhouse promised to make Jackson the highest paid rookie in NFL history at the football draft and repeated his claim after Jackson was chosen by the Royals in the baseball draft.

Jackson said his late selection in the baseball draft would not affect his decision.

'I'd rather be drafted in the fourth round by the world champions than in the first round by somebody else,' he said.

Jackson also reiterated that he was leaving all his options open, including finishing the USFL season with Birmingham, and that he would make the decision on his own.

“When all this is over with, I don't want anybody saying “Bo didn't give us a chance,'' Jackson said. “If I listened to everybody's feelings about what I should do, I would be a very sick person now.”

'86 Chronology-Auction Block

Event Date: March 20th, 1986

Event Description: Manges Manipulations

Source: UPI

A state district court judge Thursday ordered the San Antonio Gunslingers franchise transferred to the Bexar County sheriff's office for public auction to settle a legal judgment.

The ruling by state district Judge Rose Spector of San Antonio was in a lawsuit filed last week by U.S. Football League Players Association attorney Phil Hardberger on behalf of 52 former Gunslingers owed more than $600,000 in back pay.

During the hearing, it was reported that owner Clinton Manges had last fall transferred ownership of the franchise to his four children.

But Spector said the franchise's membership in the USFL was not transferred, so it still was under the control of Manges' South Texas Sports Inc.

Last month, sheriff's deputies confiscated an estimated $100,000 worth of equipment from the team offices at Alamo Stadium to help satisfy the debt owed the players.

Bounced and skipped paychecks plagued the team during its 1985 season. The Gunslingers played for the last time last June, unpaid for that game or for the three games that preceded it. Manges waived the entire team in last fall.

But Harry Lander of San Antonio, who organized a group of Texas investors to bid for the franchise, said after Thursday's ruling his group still wants to buy the franchise and hopefully have them reinstated.

'86 Chronology-Michaels Fired

Event Date: March 18th, 1986

Event Description: Generals Dump Michaels

Source: Football News

The owner of the New Jersey Generals of the USFL fired Coach Walt Michaels after disputes over the team's direction, and the club's defensive coordinator immediately quit in protest.

Michaels, fired as head coach of the NFL New York Jets in 1982, has been popular with the fans and players. Michaels led the Generals to the league championship last season.

Owner Donald Trump blamed Michaels for the Generals' four straight losses and said he had no choice but to fire the veteran coach.

Ted Cottrell immediately quit as the General's defensive coordinator, saying he couldn't work for Trump anymore. Offensive coordinator Chris Palmer was named interim coach.

Trump, who said he had made up his mindafter the teams’ most recent loss to the struggling Jacksonville Bulls, told the coach of his decision during an emotional meeting Sunday morning. Michaels left the meeting, got into his vehicle and drove away without talking to the news media.

Trump was visibly upset when he appeared at a news conference to make the official announcement.

“One thing I don't appreciate is reading in the papers every day that we have a rotten football team,” he said. “We don't have a bad team; it's as good as any other in the USFL.”

“It's my decision to make and that's it,” Trump said. “I know there's a lot of emotion that takes place in something like this. But we don't go to the public or the media to make a decision like this.”

The relationship between Michaels and Trump has not been good since the start of the year. Michaels has let it be known he was unhappy that the team has not signed any top players for the defense.

Trump and Michaels got into a shouting match last week because Trump thought the coach had criticized him for not providing adequate talent. Trump spokesman John Barron has publicly criticized the General's coaching staff, saying they were being too conservative.

Tom Ramsey, who started his career with the Los Angeles Express, had his rights obtained by the Oakland Invaders of the USFL from the New England Patriots in a cost-cutting move by the NFL club.

Ramsey, 25, a three-year veteran who was with the Oakland in 1984, was acquired by the Invaders to play behind Jim Zorn, a replacement for the since departed Fred Besana.

“I'm disappointed I had to hear it from somebody else,” and not from head coach Raymond Berry “or someone else in the organization, if, indeed, it's true,” Ramsey told a reporter Monday night while the deal was in the works. “I am not even sure they can sell my rights like that.”
