'85 Chronology-Hard Knocks

Event Date: March 19th, 1985

Event Description: Gamblers Remain Unbeaten

Source: PFW

Jim Kelly threw for 183 yards with two touchdown passes and Sam Harrell rushed for 159 yards with two touchdowns of his own to lead the unbeaten Houston Gamblers to a 37-14 USFL win over the Denver Gold Monday night.

Officials also made the first over-ruling of a play using an instant replay in the game.

Kelly had a 53-yard pass to Vince Courville over-ruled by official Bob Finley in the pressbox after Denver coaches requested the replay. Finley ruled that Courville caught the ball out of bounds.

Denver led 7-6 late in the opening stanza, but then fell behind at the half by a score of 16-7 after a Sam Harrell 19-yard touchdown run and a 24-yard field goal by Toni Fritsch.

Then in the third quarter, the Gamblers' defense came alive forcing three turnovers and knocking Denver pivot Vince Evans out of the game. Evans was sacked by Houston's Pete Catan forcing the veteran quarterback to exit the contest with a shoulder injury.

Houston then increased its lead to 30-7 on a 60-yard punt return by Gerald McNeil

Kelly added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Sanders with 5:27 left in the game to give Houston a 37-14 lead.

Game Notes: Denver wideout Marc Lewis led all receivers with six receptions for 80 yards…Bob Gagliano finished 5-of-18 for 83 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions after replacing Evans.
