'84 Chronology-Week #4 Roundup

Memphis 27
Chicago 26

Van Heflin caught a Mike Kelley touchdown pass with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the Memphis Showboats to a 27-26 upset win at Chicago. The play capped a nine-play, 60 yard drive as the expansion Showboats improved to (3-1).

Mike Kelley finished the contest 34-of-44 for 358 yards with three touchdown passes and two picks, while tight end Gary Shirk hauled in a dozen passes for 170 yards for Memphis.

The (1-3) Blitz  were led by backup quarterback Greg Landry who converted 22-of-42 for 317 yards with a pair of touchdowns, four sacks and four interceptions. Tim Spencer led the Chicago ground game with 82 yards on twelve attempts with one touchdown.

Game Notes-Vince Evans missed his second start of the season due to injury, but he is slated to return next week...the teams combined for 926 yards of net offense.

New Orleans 41
Tampa Bay 24

Johnny Walton tossed a pair of first quarter touchdowns, before leaving due to injury, as the New Orleans Breakers upset the Tampa Bay Bandits by a score of 41-24, improving their record to (2-2).

Walton completed 5 of 7 passes for 117 yards and backup Robin Gabriel tossed a third quarter touchdown pass to Dan Ross for the visitors. Buford Jordan led the ground attack with 93 yards on eighteen totes with a pair of scores. Marcus Dupree chipped in 82 yards on 19 carries in just his second pro start.

John Reaves finished with 296 passing yards on 17 of 28 efficiency with a pair of touchdowns and one interception for the (3-1) Bandits.

Game Notes-Tampa running back Gary Anderson rushed for 89 yards while Breakers’ wideout Frank Lockett led all receivers with 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Oakland 20
Washington 23

Reggie Collier tossed a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Joey Walters to help lead Federals to a 23-20 win over visiting Oakland. 

Curtis Bledsoe rushed for 123 yards to pace the Washington ground offense, while Joe Hines led the way defensively with a dozen tackles and one forced fumble.

Game Notes-Fred Besana finished 28 of 43 for 257 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception for the (1-3) Invaders.

Los Angeles 21
New Jersey 26

The New Jersey Generals posted their first victory of the season as Maurice Carthon led the way with a pair of scores to go along with 90 yards rushing as New Jersey outlasted Los Angeles.

Brian Sipe completed 20-of-33 passes for 243 yards and Herschel Walker added 87 yards rushing with one touchdown as New Jersey improved to (1-3).

Frank Seurer completed 22-of-43 passes for 233 yards with a pair of touchdown passes and two interceptions. 

Game Notes-Steve Young remained on the teams’ taxi-squad as he continues to prepare to take the helm at quarterback...wideout Jo jo Townsell paced the Express with eight receptions for 92 yards including a fourth quarter touchdown reception.

Houston 45
Jacksonville 17

A crowd of over in 73,00 filled the Gator Bowl as Jacksonville fans watched the Houston Gamblers roll to a 45-17 win.

Jim Kelly threw for 258 yards with four touchdown passes as the Gamblers shredded the Jacksonville secoandary. Kelly completed 20-of-31 passes with one interception and one sack. Kelly connected with Richard Johnson for a pair of scores, while also finding Todd Fowler and Ricky Sanders. Johnson led all receivers with 78 yards on seven receptions.

Backup quarterback Robbie Mahfouz finished with 233 yards passing on 26-of-43 efficiency with a pair of touchdowns and three picks.

Game Notes: The Gamblers rushed for 171 yards on 35 attempts, while limiting the Bulls to just 35 rushing yards.
