The U.S. Football League is negotiating for a possible $70 million television contract, the Philadelphia Daily News reported today.
The league signed a two-year, $18 million pact two years ago with ABC, ESPN and Canadian TV and the agreement expires at the end of the current season. The Daily News quoted an unnamed league source as saying officials are hopeful they will get more than four times that much in a new agreement.
“Between network, cable and Canadian rights, we're looking for it to produce somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 million next year,” the source told the Daily News. “It's very gettable. I think we have a real good shot at it.”
The Daily News also reported that NBC, which made an unsuccessful bid for the network rights to the league two years ago, is also interested in obtaining at least a partial USFL contract for next season.
The league's contract with ABC included a two-year option that called for increasing revenue, but the league source told the Daily News the time for exercising that option is past.
