'84 Chronology-Plausible Deniability

Event Date: March 21st, 1984

Event Description:  Zendejas Denies Offer

Arizona State kicker Luis Zendejas has denied he's received an offer from the Oakland Invaders of the U.S. Football League to bypass his senior year of college eligibility.

“I haven't heard of any offers,” Zendejas told The Arizona Republic Tuesday night.

“There have been people who want to represent me and things, but they didn't say anything about a contract or money. I haven't talked with anyone yet.”

The newspaper quoted an unidentified source as saying the Invaders had offered Zendejas -- who holds numerous ASU and NCAA kicking records - a 2-year contract at $250,000 a year plus a $500,000 signing bonus.

“If it's that much, I'll consider it,” Zendejas said. “I'm pretty sure everyone would understand. For that much money, they'd almost have to.”

A spokesman for the Invaders, Bryan Ramona, said it was the team's policy not to pursue underclassmen.

ASU Coach Darryl Rogers said he had asked Zendejas about rumors that he had received feelers from the Invaders and another USFL team, the Arizona Outlaws.

“He told me he has never had an offer in any way, shape or form,” Rogers said.
