'83 Chronology-The USFL on ESPN

Event Date: March 8th, 1983

Event Description: Stallions Win; Collier Injured

Source: UPI

Quarterback Reggie Collier threw two touchdown passes and ran for another Monday night to lead the Birmingham Stallions to their first victory of the USFL season, a 34-26 decision over the Michigan Panthers.

Collier hit Earl Gant from 13 yards out to open the scoring and later found Ron Frederick in the back of the endzone for a 22-yard score near the end of the first half. Collier left the game with a serious leg injury midway through the third frame.

A late touchdown run from Lyman White combined with a Scott Norwood fild goal in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

Earl Gant led all rushers with 124 yards on 19 carries and Ken Talton chipped in an additional 86 yards on 27 totes.

Michigan got off to a quick start in the second half when Bobby Hebert found Frank McClain for a nine-yard touchdown followed by a one-yard touchdown run from Tony Ellis who was filling in for the injured Ken Lacy.

Late in the fourth quarter, John Williams brought the Panthers to within five after a one-yard touchdown plunge. A failed two-point conversion left the Stallins ahead 31-26. But with under a minute left to play Norwood booted a 44-yard field goal to make it 34-26 Birmingham.

Game Notes: Reggie Collier is expected to miss the next 8-10 weeks after suffering a leg injury while being sacked by Michigan linebacker John Corker...Bobby Hebert passed for 188 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in his pro debut.

Such a crushing injury given Collier's dynamic start. His raw talent really seemed to significantly bewilder the Panthers defense. For the Stallions' sake, hopefully a full week of reps will better prepare Lane for next week's tilt in Oakland.

With Melvin Williams antipated promotion to the active roster, perhaps the Stallions will start trying out some available arms next week? Having recently lost out to Steve Pisarkiewicz for the 3rd string job in Philly, I hear former Colt and Wake Forest standout Jay Venuto is available...some other younger late camp cuts/current options could be Tom Porras (Univ of Wash / Blitz camp) or Dwight Prudhomme (SW LA / Generals camp)...or perhaps an old veteran like late camp releases Joe Gilliam (Gold camp) or Mike Livingston (Breakers camp). Will be interesting to see what they do next.
