John Ralston, a veteran coach and football administrator, has replaced Randy Vataha as president of the USFL's New Orleans Breakers.

Breakers owner Joe Canizaro said Vataha is leaving the franchise for personal reasons.

“I'm excited about John being with us,” Canizaro said. “John has a tremendous background in football and he's going to be a great asset to the team.”

Ralston, 57, won two Rose Bowls as Stanford coach and spent five years coaching the Denver Broncos. He joined the Oakland Invaders when the USFL was formed two years ago, serving as head coach until early last season, when he was replaced and became general manager.

Ralston was expected to join the Breakers as vice president in charge of personnel and player contracts. But with Vataha's departure, Ralston's duites will include business and personnel operations.

The appointment, announced Friday, eliminates the problem of a philosophical difference that existed between Vataha and coach Dick Coury. Insiders said the two disagreed on how the club should be run.

Ralston said he's satisifed having Coury and Canizaro “as the people up front. I'd like to be a behind-the-scenes person.”
