'84 Chronology-Week #15 Roundup

Los Angeles 28
Houston 42

Jim Kelly finished with 271 passing  yards to go along with four touchdown passes as Houston out dueled Los Angeles in a battle between two of the leagues best young quarterbacks.

Ricky Sanders led all receivers with 90 yards on five receptions with two scores and Richard Johnson added 77 yards on seven receptions as Houston improved to (9-6) after the 42-28 win. Todd Fowler rushed for 92 yards on twenty carries with two touchdown runs and one touchdown reception.

The (7-8) Express were led by quarterback Steve Young who converted 16-of-34 for 208 yards with a pair of touchdowns but was intercepted four times to go along with five sacks. Young added 83 rushing yards and also scored via a 19-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Kevin Nelson led all rushers with 117 yards on twenty-three totes as the Express piled up a team total of 237 rushing yards on 40 attempts.

Game Notes-The Express were without the services of star lineman Mark Adickes who was absent due to injury...Pete Catan finished with nine tackles and two sacks for the home team.

Philadelphia 28
Memphis 24

Chuck Fusina tossed a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Willie Collier to help lead Stars to a 28-21 win over the Memphis Showboats.

Collier finished with 119 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Stars improved to a league best (14-1). Kelvin Bryant rushed for 65 yards with one touchdown runs to pace the Philadelphia ground game.

Memphis quarterback Walter Lewis passed for 303 yards on 30 of 42 efficiency with three touchdowns and one interception. Lewis also led the Showboats ground game with 42 yards on eight carries.

Game Notes-Calvin Clark paced the Memphis defense with ten tackles and one sack.

Oakland 0
Chicago 37

The Blitz defense dominated and the Chicago offense piled up 399 total yards as Chicago crushed Oakland by a score of 37-0.

Leading the Chicago ground attack was Gary Worthy who finished with 85 yards on 19 attempts with one score, and Vince Evans and Greg Landry both tossed touchdown passes in the rout.

Evans finished 12 of 21 for 127 yards with one interception before exiting the game due to injury. Backup quarterback Greg Landry finished 10 of 14 for 136 yards with one interception and two sacks.

Kris Haines finished with six receptions for 106 yards with one score and Marcus Anderson grabbed seven receptions for 85 yards with one touchdown for the home team.

Oakland pivot Fred Besana tossed four interceptions and was sacked five times en route to an 83 yard passing day. 

Game Notes-Chicago backer Jeff Gabrielson returned an interception 27 yards to set up the Evans touchdown pass...Eric Jordan led the Oakland offense with 62 rushing yards.

New Jersey 26
Tampa Bay 35

John Reaves tossed a pair of touchdowns and Gary Anderson rushed for 99 yards as the Tampa Bay Bandits downed New Jersey by a score of 35-26, improving their record to (10-5) and moving one step closer to the playoffs.

Reaves completed 29 of 40 passes for 406 yards and tight end Marvin Harvey hauled in eight of those passes for 136 yards for the hosts. Greg Boone and Ricky Williams both chipped in touchdown runs and Eric Truvillion and Willie Gillespie added touchdown receptions.

Brian Sipe finished with 243 passing yards on 18 of 30 efficiency with a trio of touchdowns and one sack for the (7-8) Generals. Herschel Walker led the ground attack with 98 yards on only twelve carries.

Game Notes-The teams combined for 920 yards of total offense with the Bandits leading the way with 535.

Jacksonville 14
Pittsburgh 20

Glenn Carano finished with 195 passing yards on 11-of-25 efficiency, including a pair of touchdowns as the maulers improved to (8-7) after downing visiting Jacksonville. Mike Rozier led the Maulers with 87 yards on 23 carries and Jackie Flowers hauled in a pair of passes for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Jacksonville starter Matt Robinson piled up 342 passing yards on 28-of-49 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. Robinson was also sacked six times and was under heavy pressure for much of the contest.

Game Notes-Pittsburgh punter Larry Swider averaged just over 50 yards per punt on five kicks.

Denver 16
New Orleans 13

Breakers’ kicker Tim Mazzetti connected on a 31-yard field goal in overtime to lead New Orleans to a 16-13 win over visiting Denver. 

Mazzetti also connected on two other field goals and Marcus Dupree scored a third-quarter touchdown as new Orleans improved to (6-9) on the season.

Craig Penrose finished with 305 passing yards on 27-of-38 efficiency with tone touchdown, one interception and three sacks for the Gold who have now dropped to (6-9) as well.

Elmer Bailey tallied six receptions for 96 yards and Harry Sydney led all rushers with 70 yards on 16 carries.


Game Notes-The Gold defense was led by Tom Sullivan and David Martin both of which registered 11 tackles for the visitors...Breakers pivot Johnnie Walton finished with 234 yards passing with one interception and one sack.
