A three year agreement for exclusive cable television rights beginning in 1985 has been reached between the U.S. Football League and ESPN, it was announced by both parties Thursday.

The pact will allow ESPN, which has provided cable coverage of the USFL since its inaugural 1983 season, an opportunity to televise a significantly increased number of games and includes a large ESPN advertising campaign to promote the telecasts.

“In just two short years the USFL has proven its demand and appeal among ESPN viewers,” said ESPN President William Grimes. “With its increasing quality of play and players, the USFL has the momentum to enjoy tremendous growth over the next three years and ESPN is delighted to be a part of this sports and marketing success story.”

ESPN televised 34USFL games last year and increased to 36 telecasts in 1984.
