Bob Lane threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns Sunday to help the Birmingham Stallions to a 35-9 rout of Washington, handing the Federals their fourth USFL defeat.

Lane, playing in place of the injured Reggie Collier, completed 19-of-22 passes, including touchdown throws of 24, 9 and 18 yards.

Lane, a second-year pro from Northeast Louisiana, pushed the Stallions to a comfortable 21-6 halftime lead with a nine-yard scoring pass to veteran Jim Smith.

Following a 34-yard field goal by Washington's Dale Castro, Ken Talton pushed Birmingham's lead to 28-9 with a four-yard touchdown run. The play capped a 23-yard, four-play drive and sent many of the Washington fans home.

Birmingham's final touchdown of the day came on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lane to Greg Anderson.

In other games, Denver kept New Jersey winless after a 24-20 victory, Boston topped Michigan 24-14 and Chicago beat Los Angeles 17-7. Philadelphia downed Tampa Bay 30-3 on Saturday night.
