Bob Lane threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Birmingham Stallions handed Denver its fifth loss of the season, beating the Gold 27-20 in Sunday USFL action.
The win before a crowd of 26,250 boosted the Stallions to 5-2, now just one game behind division leader Chicago.
Lane tossed a 12-yard pass to Ken Talton and a 64-yarder to Greg Anderson. Talton also paced the Stallions’ run game by racking up 89 yards on 20 carries. Scott Norwood connected on four field goals in the win.
Denver quarterback Alvin White, who left the game due to injury in the second quarter, tossed a five-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter to Vic James. Harry Sydney scored the other Denver touchdown on a second-quarter two-yard run.
In other Sunday action; the Chicago Blitz suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to Michigan 17-14; meanwhile Washington edged New Jersey 14-7, and Boston pounded Arizona 24-3.
On Saturday, Allen Harvin scored via a 70-yard run and David Trout nailed three field goals, to power the Philadelphia Stars to a 23-14 win over the Invaders at the Oakland Coliseum. The Stars' win gives them a perfect 7-0 record, while Oakland has now fallen to (1-6).
