'83 Chronology-Six for Six

Fullback Kevin Long scored a pair of touchdowns and the Chicago defense scored two more touchdowns to lead the Chicago Blitz to a 29-7 USFL victory over the Birmingham Stallions.

Before an announced crowd of 13,859, Tim Spencer, who gained 66 yards in 26 carries, teamed with Long to lead the Blitz' rushing attack and help Chicago post its sixth win in six games. Birmingham, which committed seven turnovers, fell to 4-2.

Spencer set up Long's first touchdown by gaining 32 yards in a 78-yard, five-play drive that ended with Long running around left end for the touchdown with 12:22 remaining in the first quarter. Later in the half, a 22-yard fumble recovery led to a score by linebacker Stan White as the Blitz led 12-0 at the intermission.

The Stallions staged a brief comeback early in the final frame as Bob Lane found Greg Anderson for a 35-yard touchdown strike, pulling the Stallions to within 12 at 19-7.


Frank Corral added a 21-yard field goal with 6:08 remaining to put Chicago ahead 22-7. Corral's field goal came after the Blitz ran 14-plays, covering 69 yards and chewed up over six minutes off the clock.
