The Birmingham Stallions waived eight players Monday, including 1983 starting defensive backs Emmuel Thompson and Billy Cesare, while trading future draft choices for two veteran defensive linemen.

The Stallions also released two holdovers from last season - receiver Sylvestor Moy and linebacker Freddie Smith.

Other players cut included defensive tackle Ray Coley of Alabama A&M, rookie running back Andre Thomas of Ole Miss, rookie guard Chris McKay of Central Michigan and rookie nose tackle Ron Norman of Arkansas.

The Stallions gave up a conditional draft choice to Oklahoma for Joe Gerry, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end, and an undisclosed draft choice to San Antonio for Joe Kugliaria, a 6-3, 262-pound nose tackle.

Gerry is a former UCLA standout and a sixth-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys. Kugliaria has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The cuts trimmed the Stallions' roster to the USFL season limit of 50. Birmingham will visit the Houston Gamblers on Saturday in its 1984 opener.
