Fresno State University football coach Jim Sweeney, on the eve of his team's game against Bowling Green in the California Bowl, confirmed Friday he will meet next week with officials of the Arizona Wranglers of the new United States Football League.

Sweeney denied a local television report he had already signed a contract with the USFL team. “The report I heard on a local television station is absolutely false,” Sweeney said Thursday night. “There is no way in the world that is true.” He said he had a “verbal commitment” to negotiate with the Wranglers following the California Bowl game.

A Phoenix newspaper reported Thursday that Brad Liebman, minority owner of the Wranglers, said the choice for head coach was either Sweeney or University of Illinois head coach Mike White. “I'd say that we will have a coach within 24 hours, certainly within the next two days,” Liebman said, adding an announcement would not be made until next week.
