The Los Angeles Express of the USFL signed five players, including defensive back Jay Lawson, a third-round draft choice from UC Davis, the team announced Monday.

Others signed were offensive tackle Chuck Page, punter Jeff Carter and linebacker Kevin Junior -- all draft picks from Cal State Long Beach - and defensive back John Warren of Virginia Union, a seventh-round selection in the open-school draft.The Express also announced it has come to terms with three-year NFL veteran running back Robert Alexander, a free agent who played for the Los Angeles Rams in 1982-83 and the San Diego Chargers last year.

Lawson, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback, was a two-time All-Northern California Athletic Conference choice and was the defending NCAC intermediate hurdles champion. He was the 45th overall pick of the 1985 USFL open-school draft.

The Express completed its first full day of training camp Monday and must trim its current 84-man roster to 70 players by Monday.
