Center Tom Banks, the first player signed by the Birmingham Stallions, has announced his retirement as a player, but will remain with the USFL team as offensive line coach.

Banks, whose retirement ends a 13-year playing career, will replace Rich McGeorge, who resigned to become offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Bandits.

Banks, 36, was an All-America at Auburn and played 11 years with the St. Louis Cardinals in the NFL, earning All-Pro honors four times and making eight appearances in the Pro Bowl.

He retired from football prior to the 1981 season, but became the first player to sign with the Stallions in November 1982. He started every game in the club's two-year history, earning second-team all-league honors in 1983 and being selected team captain last season.
