Bob Lane threw two touchdown passes to tight end Darryl Mason to lead the Birmingham Stallions to a 36-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Bandits and a share of second place in the Central Division.

The triumph lifted the Lions into a tie for second place with Michigan, both with 10-4 records.

"It was an important win for us because now we havea legitimate shot at making the playoffs,” said coach Rollie Dotsch. “At this point I'd thought we'd have seven or eight wins not 10.”

In other Sunday games, Philadelphia swamped Michigan 41-3 and Los Angeles pounded Arizona 30-10.

In Philadelphia, Kelvin Bryant rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns as the Stars improved to (13-1) while the Panthers dropped to (10-4).

In Los Angeles, Tom Ramsey teamed with Kris Haines on a pair of touchdown receptions in the second quarter to lift the Express. A crowd of 13,826 -- the smallest in the Express' seven games at the 95,000-seat Coliseum -- saw Los Angeles improve their record at to (6-8).

Herschel Walker scored a pair of touchdowns and veteran linebacker Rod Shoate returned a fumble 47 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter. Harvard University Friday rejected a request by the Boston Breakers to play their 1984 home United States Football League games in Harvard Stadium.

Athletic Director John P. Reardon Jr. cited a commitment to host 1984 Olympic soccer competition and the “huge” Harvard and neighborhood sports programs in rejecting the request from Breakers President Robert Caporale. The USFL team uses Boston University's Nickerson Field for home games.

The facility, which sits next to Boston University dormitories, was expanded to hold 20,000, although attendance figures are the lowest in the 12-team league.

'83 Chronology-Clearing the Way

Event Date: June 4th, 1983

Event Description:  Bassett Supports Bullard

Source: United Press International

The owner of the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits said Thursday he has surrendered his expansion rights for Florida and cleared the way for a new league franchise in Jacksonville.

John Bassett, majority owner of the Bandits, and general partner Stephen Arky agreed Wednesday to a proposal made by Clearwater businessman Fred Bullard, who wants to place an expansion team in Jacksonville.

Bassett, who owns the USFL's expansion rights in Florida, said it's “95 percent sure” Jacksonville will have a team in the league by next year.

“As far as I'm concerned, as long as he puts up his money and the league agrees to him and his representatives, he'll have a team,” said Bassett. “The only thing that could foul it up is lawyers, and the league owners not approving him.”

Bullard, who must pay a $6 million expansion fee, was unavailable for comment. But an associate said all systems were “go” for a new club. “I got a call that said, “The contract is in our pocket. Get smiling again, everything is go,'' said Charlie Roberts, a spokesman for Bullard.

A USFL spokesman in New York said he could not comment on the agreement, but said owners were expected to vote on league expansion at a meeting next week in Denver. Cities already granted expansion franchises for next year include Houston, Pittsburgh and San Diego.

Bassett declined to discuss specifics of the agreement, including the price Bullard would pay for the state expansion rights, but admitted to making sacrifices to help the fledgling league.

“We made concessions that were good for the league, for Jacksonville to come in,” said Bassett, whose Tampa Bay team is one of the most successful franchises in the league, averaging nearly 40,000 in attendance.

“If I was not interested in the league, in Jacksonville coming in, if I only had selfish interests, I would not have gone along with this,” he said.

Bassett also said concessions were made in the league's stocking plan of players. Tampa Bay now holds the rights to players from Florida and Florida State, but Bassett said he would “work something out with (Jacksonville). They'll get some players from Florida and Florida State.”

'83 Chronology-Blitz Pursue Kelly

Event Date: May 23rd, 1983

Event Description: Kelly Offer

Source: United Press International

Chicago Blitz General Manager Bruce Allen said Monday the USFL team has made a multi-year contract offer to rookie quarterback Jim Kelly.

Kelly, drafted in the first round by the NFL's Buffalo Bills and No. 14 by the Blitz, “was offered a sizeable contract that would include the final six games of this season,” Allen said.

The Blitz may need a quarterback to backup Greg Landry, who injured his right ankle at the very end of the fourth period of Sunday's 28-10 victory over New Jersey.

Team officials said they plan to make a move at quarterback as a result of Landry's injury. “We will have to do something about our quarterback depth,” Allen said Monday.

Besides his offer to Kelly, Allen said he has talked to several NFL quarterbacks “in hopes that we could land at least one.”

Allen said he told Kelly's agent, Greg Lustig, “we were looking for a long-term quarterback but at the same time one that could step in and possibly be a regular at some time this season.”

It also was revealed Kelly watched Tampa Bay's 44-7 victory over Oakland Saturday night as a guest of Bandits' owner John Bassett.

“We urged Kelly to go and see how the USFL games were being played and we wanted him to get a feel of what he could look forward to,” Allen said. “It is a case that Kelly must decide whether he wants to wait around for a long time at Buffalo or whether he wants to step in now and start playing even though he might not be a regular for a while.”

Allen said the team made “a considerable offer” to Kelly and the amount is very close to what Buffalo has offered.

Quarterback Mike Hohensee hit Mike Holmes with a 46-yard touchdown with 6:16 left to give the Washington Federals a 21-9 victory over the Boston Breakers.

The touchdown came two plays after Washington defensive back Jeff Brown intercepted a pass from Breakers quarterback Johnny Walton and returned it 10 yards to the Boston 46 yard line.

The loss was the second straight for the Breakers who are now in danger of missing the playoffs.

In other weekend action; Tampa Bay destroyed Oakland 44-7, with John Reaves tossing four touchdown passes, the Stars shout out Arizona 27-0, Denver blanked Los Angeles 20-0,  and the Blitz defeated the still winless New Jersey Generals  28-10.

John Williams scored his ninth and tenth touchdowns of the season to spark Michigan to their fifth victory in their last six games after a 31-13 triumph over the winless Generals at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.

“You keep expecting things to happen without making them happen,” said rookie quarterback Bobby Hebert, who was 10-of-17 for 170 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. “Coach Stanley told us to keep the pressure on in the second-half, which we did. He told us to stay focused and not let up, and if we did so we would hang on for the win.”

The victory in front of a club-record 32,862 lifted the Panthers, 8-3, tied for second place with Birmingham in the Central Division. The Generals dropped to 0-11.

Herschel Walker was held to 92 yards on 21 carries and finished with one score. Michigan rookie Ken Lacy led all rushers with 146 yards on 23 carries.

In other Monday games, Denver downed Boston 31-24 and Oakland defeated Washington 20-3.

In Boston, Denver running back Larry Canada scored two fourth quarter touchdowns as the Gold held on for the win. Denver improved to 5-6, while the Breakers have now dropped to 7-4, three games behind divison-leading Philadelphia.

In Oakland, Arthur Whittington rushed for 125 yards with a pair of touchdowns as the Invaders dominated Washington.

Off the field Monday, USFL commissioner Chet Simmons announced the league's 14th franchise will play in San Diego next March. The majority owner is William Tatham, a banking and real estate investor who is a minority owner of the NBA's Utah Jazz. Last month, the USFL awarded a franchise to Pittsburgh under owner Edward DeBartolo Sr.

'83 Chronology-Authoritative Decision

Event Date: May 14th, 1983

Event Description: San Diego Stadium Concerns

Source: United Press International

The expansion of the United States Football League to San Diego was tabled by the Stadium Authority Friday so groundskeepers could be polled about what spring football would do to the turf.

The Stadium Authority put off making a recommendation to the San Diego City Council on whether to grant the USFL a lease until May 24.

The fledgling league assured the investors in the planned team they would be awarded a franchise if a lease for San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium could be secured.

The plan was received less than enthusiastically by the authority, which runs the heavily used stadium.

The USFL team was opposed by the San Diego Padres, one of the other spring stadium tenants, who protested that football during the rainy spring months would tear up the natural sod.

The Stadium Authority must decide whether projected revenues the new league would generate are worth the wear and tear on the stadium grass. George Mitrovich, Stadium Authority president, suggested that the investors talk to the groundskeepers in Oakland and Denver about how USFL football and baseball affect grass.

“At least the Stadium Authority is willing to listen testimony on handling the turf,” said Kenneth Rietz, an investor in the proposed team. “If we can solve the turf problem, we should be in good shape.”
