Event Date: May 3rd, 1984

Event Description:  Steinberg Criticizes Draft

Source: United Press International

Sports attorney Leigh Steinberg said Friday drafts by both the USFL and the NFL are "unfair" in America's free enterprise system and should be done away with.

Steinberg, addressing the influential Commonwealth Club of California, spoke on the problems facing professional football in the future.

He said the draft had kept salaries for professional football players at a "low" level in the past. It has only been recently, the attorney said, that salaries have started to climb.

Steinberg has been one of the front runners at negotiating big-money contracts for his clients including Steve Young, Warren Moon and Mark Gastineau.
