The San Diego Chargers of the NFL reportedly reached a verbal agreement to buy running back Gary Anderson's contract with the Tampa Bay Bandits pending its approval by the USFL.
The San Diego Union and Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday the agreement would cost Chargers owner Alex Spanos $350,000 for the buy-out, and a four-year contract worth $2 million for Anderson.
Lee Scarfone, who has the option to buy the Tampa club, said he expected the USFL to allow Anderson to jump to the NFL.
Spanos said the deal could be formalized as early as Wednesday.
The Chargers have signed other USFL defectors, including running back Tim Spencer and wide receiver Trumaine Johnson.
Anderson, one of the top runners in the USFL, was drafted in the first round in 1983 by the Chargers.
