Event Description: USFL Preview: Pacific Division

Arizona Outlaws

1983 Record: 1-17*

Stadium: Sun Devil Stadium

Avg. Attendance: 25,778

Head Coach: George Allen

Owner: William Tatham

Key players: QB Doug Williams, QB Rick Neuheisel, RB Kevin Long, WR Trumaine Johnson, WR Wamon Buggs, WR-RB Mel Gray, TE Mark Keel, OC Gerry Sullivan, OL David Huffman, OG Alvin Powell, DE Karl Lorch, DT Kit Lathrop, DL Joe Ehrmann, LB Stan White, LB Jim Fahnhorst, DB Lupe Sanchez, DB Bruce Laird, DB Selwyn Drain, K-P Frank Corral.

Sport Scene’s Outlook: When the numbers didn’t add up in Chicago, George Allen and Company bid adieu to the Windy City for the Arizona desert via a so-called "soft merger" between the Blitz and now defunct Wranglers who could return in the form of an expansion team in the future.

General Manager Bruce Allen has said that he doesn’t want to wage a pocketbook war with the NFL, however the signing of ex-Buc Doug Williams sent shock waves through the senior circuit.

Allen’s coaching and the new owners make the Outlaws the favorite to clinch the division

1984 Prediction: 12-6 1st place

Los Angeles Express

1983 Record: 7-11

Stadium: Los Angeles Coliseum

Avg. Attendance: 19,001

Head Coach: John Hadl

Owner: J. William Oldenberg

Key players: QB Tom Ramsey, RB Kevin Nelson, FB Kevin Mack, TE Mike Sherrod, WR Freddie Scott, WR Jo-JO Townsell, RB-TE David Hersey, OC Mike Ruether, G Wayne Jones, OT Jeff Hart, OT Gary Zimmerman, DL Eddie “Meatclever” Weaver, DE Greg Fields, LB Howard Carson, DB Wymon Henderson, S Troy West, K Tony Zendejas.

Sports Scene’s Outlook: There’s a new look to the L.A. Express for 1984, that’s for certain, and this is a  team that should improve for its second year in the league.

General Manager Don Klostermann signed a number of college players to go along with a sprinkling of free agents. New head coach John Had should help the offense become better balanced and if that happens this team could challenge for a playoff berth.

1984 Prediction: 9-9 2nd place

Denver Gold

1983 Record: 8-10

Stadium: Mile High Stadium

Avg. Attendance: 41,736

Head Coach: Craig Morton

Owner: Ron Blanding

Key players: QB Craig Penrose, RB Vincent White, RB Harry Sydney, FB Bo Matthews, OG George Yarno, OC John Yarno, C-G Tom Davis, DE Dave Stalls, DE Calvin Turner, DE Bruce Thornton, LB John Barefield, LB Putt Chaote, DB David Dumars.

Sport Scene’s Outlook: The Gold got a bad break when the league allowed the soft merger between Chicago and Arizona as the new Outlaws club becomes the clear favorite.

Denver however, should be in the battle for the Pacific’s runner-up spot if the defense improves and the team can develop a passing attack with new head coach Craig Morton at the helm.

1984 Prediction: 7-11 4th place

Oakland Invaders

1983 Record: 7-11

Stadium: Oakland Coliseum

Avg. Attendance: 30,622

Head Coach: John Ralston

Owner: Tad Taube

Key players: QB Fred Besana, RB Arthur Whittington, FB Tom Newton, WR Gordon Banks, OC Jeff Harper, OL Jim Leonard, OT Dale Markham, DE Dave Browning, LB Gary Plummer, DB Derrick Martin, DB Marcus Quinn.

Sport Scene’s Outlook: Oakland had a fine first season, but the fabric of the club of this team is starting to unwind and there’s apparently little effort being expended by management to undertake the necessary patch job.

1984 Prediction: 6-12 4th place
