Event Description: USFL Preview: Pacific Division

Arizona Outlaws

1983 Record: 1-17*

Stadium: Sun Devil Stadium

Avg. Attendance: 25,778

Head Coach: George Allen

Owner: William Tatham

Key players: QB Doug Williams, QB Rick Neuheisel, RB Kevin Long, WR Trumaine Johnson, WR Wamon Buggs, WR-RB Mel Gray, TE Mark Keel, OC Gerry Sullivan, OL David Huffman, OG Alvin Powell, DE Karl Lorch, DT Kit Lathrop, DL Joe Ehrmann, LB Stan White, LB Jim Fahnhorst, DB Lupe Sanchez, DB Bruce Laird, DB Selwyn Drain, K-P Frank Corral.

Sport Scene’s Outlook: When the numbers didn’t add up in Chicago, George Allen and Company bid adieu to the Windy City for the Arizona desert via a so-called "soft merger" between the Blitz and now defunct Wranglers who could return in the form of an expansion team in the future.

General Manager Bruce Allen has said that he doesn’t want to wage a pocketbook war with the NFL, however the signing of ex-Buc Doug Williams sent shock waves through the senior circuit.

Allen’s coaching and the new owners make the Outlaws the favorite to clinch the division

1984 Prediction: 12-6 1st place

Los Angeles Express

1983 Record: 7-11

Stadium: Los Angeles Coliseum

Avg. Attendance: 19,001

Head Coach: John Hadl

Owner: J. William Oldenberg

Key players: QB Tom Ramsey, RB Kevin Nelson, FB Kevin Mack, TE Mike Sherrod, WR Freddie Scott, WR Jo-JO Townsell, RB-TE David Hersey, OC Mike Ruether, G Wayne Jones, OT Jeff Hart, OT Gary Zimmerman, DL Eddie “Meatclever” Weaver, DE Greg Fields, LB Howard Carson, DB Wymon Henderson, S Troy West, K Tony Zendejas.

Sports Scene’s Outlook: There’s a new look to the L.A. Express for 1984, that’s for certain, and this is a  team that should improve for its second year in the league.

General Manager Don Klostermann signed a number of college players to go along with a sprinkling of free agents. New head coach John Had should help the offense become better balanced and if that happens this team could challenge for a playoff berth.

1984 Prediction: 9-9 2nd place

Denver Gold

1983 Record: 8-10

Stadium: Mile High Stadium

Avg. Attendance: 41,736

Head Coach: Craig Morton

Owner: Ron Blanding

Key players: QB Craig Penrose, RB Vincent White, RB Harry Sydney, FB Bo Matthews, OG George Yarno, OC John Yarno, C-G Tom Davis, DE Dave Stalls, DE Calvin Turner, DE Bruce Thornton, LB John Barefield, LB Putt Chaote, DB David Dumars.

Sport Scene’s Outlook: The Gold got a bad break when the league allowed the soft merger between Chicago and Arizona as the new Outlaws club becomes the clear favorite.

Denver however, should be in the battle for the Pacific’s runner-up spot if the defense improves and the team can develop a passing attack with new head coach Craig Morton at the helm.

1984 Prediction: 7-11 4th place

Oakland Invaders

1983 Record: 7-11

Stadium: Oakland Coliseum

Avg. Attendance: 30,622

Head Coach: John Ralston

Owner: Tad Taube

Key players: QB Fred Besana, RB Arthur Whittington, FB Tom Newton, WR Gordon Banks, OC Jeff Harper, OL Jim Leonard, OT Dale Markham, DE Dave Browning, LB Gary Plummer, DB Derrick Martin, DB Marcus Quinn.

Sport Scene’s Outlook: Oakland had a fine first season, but the fabric of the club of this team is starting to unwind and there’s apparently little effort being expended by management to undertake the necessary patch job.

1984 Prediction: 6-12 4th place

Michigan Panthers

1983 Record: 14-4

Stadium: Pontiac Silverdome

Avg. Attendance: 22,251

Head Coach: Jim Stanley

Key players: QB Bobby Hebert, WR Anthony Carter, RB Ken Lacy, FB John Williams, TE Mike Cobb, OG Tyrone McGriff, OG Thom Dornbrook, OT Ray Pinney, DT David Tipton, DL John Banaszak, DL Larry Bethea, LB John Corker, LB Ray Bentley, DB Clarence Chapman, S David Greenwood, K Novo Bojovic.

Sport Scene's Outlook: Owner A. Alfred Taubman has brought in Vince Lombardi Jr., son of the NFL legend, as team president and general manager while promoting Mike Keller to director of football operations.

Taubman's willingness to open any door in pursuit of a league championship is a major reason why the Panthers could wind up in the league championship game.

1984 Prediction: 11-7 1st place

Chicago Blitz

1983 Record: 15-3*

Stadium: Soldier Field

Avg. Attendance: 18,090

Head Coach: Marv Levy

Key players: QB Greg Landry, RB Vince Evans, RB Tim Spencer, RB Vagas Ferguson, WR Kris Haines, TE Tim Wrightman, OC Tom Thayer, OL Glenn Hyde, DE Malcolm Taylor, LB Jeff Gabrielson, DB Virgil Livers, DB Doug Plank, P Jeff Gossett.

Sport Scene's Outlook: This is a revamped Blitz team Marv Levy will lead into the 1984 season, and the worst one can expect Chicago to finish in the expansion dotted Central Division is runner-up to the powerful Michigan Panthers.

1984 Prediction: 9-9 2nd place

Houston Gamblers

1983 Record: Expansion Team

Stadium: Astrodome

Avg. Attendance: TBD

Head Coach: Jack Pardee

Key players: QB Jim Kelly, RB Sam Harrell, FB Todd Fowler, WR Greg Moser, WR Ricky Sanders, OC Greg Davidson, G Scott Boucher, DL Ernie Price, DE Pete Catan, LB Andy Hawkins, DB Will Lewis, S Tommy Myers, K Toni Fritsch.

Sport Scene's Outlook: With head coach Jack Pardee vowing the Gambler attack will be exciting, look for Kelly to air the pigskin out early and often as he plays catch with a receiving corps that at least on paper looks like it will do by USFL standards.

Win, lose or draw this team should draw fine support in Houston as football fans are anxious to see what the new kids on the block are all about.
1984 Prediction: 8-10 3rd place

New Orleans Breakers

1983 Record: 9-9

Stadium: The Superdome

Avg. Attendance: TBD* (12,735 while in Boston)

Head Coach: Dick Coury

Key players: QB Johnny Walton, RB Buford Jordan, FB Mark Schellen, WR Frank Lockett, TE Dan Ross, OG Greg Horton, OT Louis Bullard, DE Junior Ah You, K Tim Mazzetti

Sports Scene's Outlook:  Led by an exceptional coaching staff headed by the very capable Dick Coury, New orleans should field a solid offense and a bend-but-not-break defense.

With a bit of luck and a key performer here and there the Breakers could be in contention for runner-up in the Central

Southern Division Preview

Birmingham Stallions

1983 Record: 13-5

Stadium: Legion Field

Avg. Attendance: 22,046

Head Coach: Rollie Dotsch

Owner: Marvin Warner

Key players: QB Cliff Stoudt, RB Joe Cribbs, WR Jim Smith, WR Joey Jones, OC Tom Banks, G-T Buddy Aydelette, OT Pat Phenix, DL Dave Purifoy, LB Herb Spencer, DB Chuck Clanton, P Bob Parson.

Sport Scene's Outlook: Joe Cribbs gives the Stallions the genuine breakaway threat that they lacked last season. Toss in two key elements in the sill-young league-a coach who knows how to win and an owner who's willing to spend--and Birmingham's prospects look bright for 1984.

1984 Prediction: 12-6 1st place

Tampa Bay Bandits

1983 Record: 5-13

Stadium: Tampa Stadium

Avg. Attendance: 39,911

Head Coach: Steve Spurrier

Owner: John Bassett

Key players: QB John Reaves, QB Jimmy Jordan, RB Gary Anderson, FB Greg Boone, WR Eric Truvillion, TE Marvin Harvey, C-G Chuck Pitcock, G Nate Newton, G-T Fred Dean, DT Ron Simmons, DE Mike Butler, LB James Harrell, DB Doug Beaudoin, K-P Zenon Andrusyshyn.

Sport Scene's Outlook: The Bandits appear to be ready to make their move into playoff contention in 1984. The team got a break with the addition of two expansion teams moving into the division.

Expect the Bandits to make a real bid for a playoff berth, and with a break or two could even end up as the playing hosts for the '84 title game set for Tampa Stadium.

1984 Prediction: 10-8 2nd place

Memphis Showboats

1983 Record: Expansion Team

Stadium: Liberty Bowl

Avg. Attendance: TBD

Head Coach: Pepper Rodgers

Owner: William Dunavent

Key players: QB Walter Lewis, RB Terdell Middleton, WR Derrick Crawford, TE Gary Shirk, OL Larry Pfohl, DE Reggie White, LB Rod Shoate, DB Barney Bussey, DB Doran Major, P Rick Partridge.

Sport Scene's Outlook: The Showboats were unable to lure Kenny "Snake" Stabler away from the NFL's New Orleans Saints, but the team did sign former Alabama starwalter Lewis to go along with ex-Georgia Tech standout Mike Kelley.

The Pepper Rodgers-led Showboats, whose offense figures to come out throwing and never look back, while on the defensive side look for the handful of vets brought on board to key a swarming, opportunistic bunch.

Ultimately, the Showboats will have to battle fellow expansionist Jacksonville to stay out of the Southern Division cellar this season.

1984 Prediction: 7-11 3rd place

Jacksonville Bulls

1983 Record: Expansion Team

Stadium: Gator Bowl

Avg. Attendance: TBD

Head Coach: Lindy Infante

Owner: Fred Bullard

Key players: QB Matt Robinson, QB Ben Bennett, RB Willie McClendon, WR Alton Alexis, WR Perry Kemp, WR Aubrey Matthews, OT Bob Gruber, DT Don Latimer, LB Tom Dinkell, LB Vaughn Johnson, DB Don Bessillieu, K Brian Franco.

Sport Scene's Outlook: Local football fans probably won't need a game program to identify the Bulls, since a large number of the Jacksonville players plied their college wares at nearby institutions of higher learning.

Personable Lindy Infante has staked his head coaching rep in Jacksonville and in time, the Bulls should respond to his astute leadership and start to jell.

1984 Prediction: 7-11 4th place
