'85 Chronology-Sluggish Start

Event Date: February 25th, 1985

Event Description: Sipe Gets Mauled

Source: PFW

William Miller scored on a 1-yard plunge and Efren Herrera each added a field goal to lead the Pittsburgh Maulers to a 10-9 victory over the Jacksonville Bulls Sunday in USFL opening weekend action.

Jacksonville's scores came via three Brian Franco field goals as the Bulls offense struggled throughout the contest.

Of greater concern however for the Bulls was the loss of starting quarterback Brian Sipe to apparent shoulder injury early in the second quarter. Sipe was injured while being sacked by rookie defensive end Keith Millard.

Robbie Mahfouz took over at quarterback leading the Bulls on a pair of drives which resulted in field goals. Mahfouz finished with 133 yards passing with two interceptions in the loss. Heisman trophy winner Mike Rozier had a steady performance for the Bulls finishing with 72 rushing yards on 18 attempts against his former team.

Game Notes: Walter Holman led the Pittsburgh offense with 64 yards rushing…Maulers quarterback Glenn Carano was sacked three times.
