Steve Ehrhart, executive director of the U.S. Football League, has been named president and general manager of the Memphis Showboats, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Showboats majority owner William Dunavant refused to confirm or deny the appointment.

“I will make no comment about this other than to say I am hopeful of being able to announce something after June 16,” Dunavant told The Commercial Appeal. “There is no way, absolutely no way, I can confirm nor deny it.”

Ehrhart, 36, was not available for comment. Ehrhart began as director of administration and counsel of the USFL, but he was moved to executive director this year.

The newspaper said it was unlikely Ehrhart would be elevated to the top post in the league if Commissioner Chet Simmons steps down.

Another USFL owner told the newspaper that Ehrhart is “too young to be the top man right now. He could possibly be the third commissioner, but right now I don't think he could get it.”

Simmons reportedly plans to retire because of health problems.

The newspaper said Ehrhart has visited Memphis several times. Ehrhart will reportedly have stock in the Showboats and oversee the operation, answering only to Dunavant.
