Birmingham quarterback Cliff Stoudt threw three touchdown passes to lead the Stallions to a 35-28 victory over the Tampa Bay Bandits Saturday in a contest between two top teams and two top quarterbacks in the USFL.

But Birmingham had to withstand one of the Bandits' patented fourth-quarter rallies that brought them within a touchdown with just over four minutes left in the contest.

Tampa wide-receiver Larry Brodsky hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Fred Besana at the 4:36 mark, however that would prove to be the last time the Bandits found the endzone.

After falling behind 24-7 at the half, the Bandits started to turn things around in the third stanza when Tampa backer Putt Choate returned an interception 20-yards for a score to pull the hosts to within 24-14.

A Danny Miller 20-yard field goal followed by the Stoudt touchdown run again extended the Stallions to a 35-14 lead.

Rookie Joe Dudek scored on a three-yard run midway through the final quarter. Dudek finished with 54 yards rushing on nine carries.

Event Date: February 28th, 1986

Event Description: Generals Eye Dent

Super Bowl MVP Richard Dent met with Chicago Bears officials for about two hours to discuss a new contract, but no agreement was reached.

Dent, reportedly seeking a three-year deal worth approximately $600,000 a year, met with General Manager Jerry Vainisi at the Bears' Lake Forest office.

Dent's agent, Everett Glenn, met with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL last week.

“We're discussing fairness and comparable salaries around the league and why I think he should accept our offer and why he feels we should come up some,” Vainisi said. “It's a normal negotiating process.”

Dent, one of nine free agents from the Bears' Super Bowl-winning club, said he was happy the Bears upped their offer last week.

“But not enough to sign it,” said the defensive lineman. “You have to continue the process until something gets done.”

Event Description: 'Slingers Assets Seized

Source: UPI

Movers enforcing a court order against South Texas Sports, parent company of the U.S. Football League Gunslingers, removed equipment worth an estimated $100,000 from the team's offices for auction, the San Antonio Light reported.

Wednesday's bulk confiscations were directed by lawyer Phil Hardberger, who obtained a $627,651.42 judgment against South Texas Sports last October on behalf of 52 former team members who had not been paid for months.

“We are taking everything that is not nailed down and some that is," Hardberger said. "Anything that can be moved will be moved."

Items seized included office furniture, photographic equipment, jerseys, helmets, a copying machine, two team buses and a pickup.

Last week the Texas 4th Court of Appeals rejected an appeal of the judgment filed by Marynell Maloney, lawyer for South Texas Sports. Maloney also failed Wednesday to get a temporary restraining order to block the confiscations.

Maloney claimed the items taken did not belong to South Texas Sports, but to Gamblers owner Clinton Manges personally.

“This is all Clinton Manges’," she said. “He (Hardberger) has a judgment against South Texas Sports, not Clinton Manges. If he (Hardberger) was really working in the best interest of his clients, he would work with Mr. Manges on this. Mr. Manges fully intends to pay the players, as soon as he gets the money.”

Former Gunslinger cornerback Pete Raeford, the first player in team history to get a touchdown at Alamo Stadium, said something had to be done.

“I'd rather get my total paycheck, but this is a first step,” he said. “It's personally satisfying, seeing them take it all.”

Event Description: Schlichter Visits Bandits

Source: UPI

Quarterback Art Schlichter, looking for a spot in professional football, has worked out for the Tampa Bay Bandits.

Schlichter was quoted last week as saying he was confident he will be playing this year and has had tryouts with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Houston Oilers before coming to Tampa.

But he said Sunday he was not discounting signing with a USFL team.

“I just want to get into a situation where I'll be comfortable,” he said after a 90-minute workout at the Bandits' training field. “I'm looking for a place where I can learn and be under somebody who is willing to work with me and give me the opportunity to improve.”

“He was very receptive to what we showed him and you don't always get that when a guy comes in for a tryout,” said Bandits coach Steve Spurrier. “He was open to any tip, and I think he might have gotten better as we went along.”

Schlichter, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, was the first round draft pick of the Baltimore Colts in 1982 and was the fourth pick overall. His first season was shortened by the players' strike, and he was suspended for the 1984 season for his involvement in gambling.

He was the No. 1 quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts last season but suffered knee and thumb injuries and was waived after the fifth game.
