'84 Chronology-Week #6 Roundup

Chicago 23
Los Angeles 34

Steve Young made his professional debut a memorable one, leading the Los Angeles Express to a 34-23 win over visiting Chicago. 

Young finished with 224 passing  yards with five touchdown passes and two interceptions. Young also finished with 57 yards rushing on nine attempts.

Jo Jo Townsell hauled in ten receptions for 122 yards to go along with a pair of touchdowns. Lonnie Turner added five receptions for 68 yards with two touchdowns of his own.

The (2-4) Bitz were led by quarterback Vince Evans who converted 26-of-49 for 349 yards with four interceptions and two touchdowns. Kicker Kevin Seibel connected on all three of his field goal attempts

Game Notes-Los Angeles running back Kevin Nelson led all rushers with 95 yards on eighteen attempts.

New Jersey 31
Memphis 24

Brian Sipe tossed three touchdowns to tight end Jeff Speck as New Jersey improved to (2-4) after their 31-24 win over Memphis.

Herschel Walker led all rushers with 152 yards on 22 carries and Jeff Speck hauled in a seven passes for 155 yards including a 75-yard touchdown reception. 

Walter Lewis returned to the lineup for Memphis and finished 20 of 40 for 316 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception for the (4-2) Showboats. Cormac Carney finished with four receptions for 117 yards with one score for the home team.

Game Notes-Memphis wideout Derrick Crawford returned a kick-off 93 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring in the second-half.

New Orleans 16
Arizona 31

A pair of Kevin Long touchdown runs sparked Arizona as the Outlaws downed visiting New Orleans by a score of 31-16.

Doug Williams completed 19-of-31 passes for 236 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Paul Ricker led all receivers with 83 yards on five receptions and Trumaine Johnson hauled in eight receptions for 77 yards with one score.

Johnny Walton completed 14-of-34 passes for 127 yards with a pair of interceptions. Buford Jordan led the Breakers’ ground attack with 96 yards on fourteen attempts with one touchdown.

Game Notes-Frank Minnifield led the Outlaws’ defense with eight tackles, two deflections and one interception.

Jacksonville 23
Washington 13

Washington pivot Mike Hohensee returned to action for the Federals but was generally ineffective finishing with 215 passing yards on 22-of-39 efficiency with no touchdowns, four interceptions and three sacks as the Federals fell to the Bulls.

The teams exchanged field goals before Jacksonville quarterback Matt Robinson found Larry Mason for a a 20 yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. Mason led all rushers with 91 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown run.

Game Notes: The teams combined for seven turnovers and a thirteen penalties.
