Event Description: Gamblers Derail Express

Jim Kelly threw for 259 yards and a touchdown as the Houston Gamblers advanced to the Western Finals after an 18-13 decision over the Los Angeles Express.
Houston will face either Birmingham or Arizona at the Astrodome next Sunday with the hope of reaching its first championship game.
Kelly completed 23-of-39 passes, including eight to Richard Johnson for 80 yards and five to Ricky Sanders for 49 yards and a score. Toni Fritsch nailed four field goals for the winners.
Steve Young compled 20-of-35 pass attempts for 196 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns.
Andy Melontree scored the lone touchdown for the Express via a 37-yard interception return. Tony Zendejas connected on both of his field goal attempts in defeat.
Houston improved to 11-0 this season when leading after three quarters...Melontree's touchdown was the first of his career...Los Angeles piled up nine penalties and gave up five sacks.

Kelvin Bryant piled up 113 rushing yards to push the Philadelphia Stars to a 27-3 victory over the Memphis Showboats in the opening round of the USFL playoffs.
Chuck Fusina completed 13 of his 21 passing attempts in the winning effort for the Stars (13-6). Ken Dunek hauled in five catches for 47 yards and Willie Collier added a touchdown reception. David Riley also tallied 29 rushing yards and added a fourth quarter touchdown.
Walter Lewis went 8-of-21 for 102 yards in the loss for Memphis (12-7). He also gained a team-best 103 yards on the ground while Gary Shirk pulled in three catches for 57 yards. Rod Shoate and Barney Bussey led all players with 10 tackles each.
Alan Duncan scored the only points for Memphis in the first quarter with just under ten minutes showing on the clock as he connected on a 46-yard field goal attempt that gave Memphis a 3-0 lead.
David Trout posted a 29 yard field goal at the 1:39 mark of the first quarter to tie things up at 3-3.
The Stars got into a rhythm in the second quarter after taking advantage of two major penalties which helped set up a four-yard touchdown run from Kelvin Bryant. Trout chipped in the extra point attempt to extend the Stars' lead to 10-3 with just under six minutes left in the first half.
Later in the quarter, Chuck Fusina hit Willie Collier on a 27-yard pass to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 17-3 as the teams went to the break.
The Stars' defense dominated the second half while the offesne added another field goal and touchdown to seal the victory.
Tim Spencer gained only 33 yards on 13 carries for Memphis...The Stars will play the winner of the Michigan-New Jersey game...Reggie White was limited to just three tackles.
