Source: Houston Star

Chuck Weatherspoon rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Houston Gamblers to a 28-12 victory over the Tampa Bay Bandits.

Jason Garrett threw for 152 yards on 16 of 21 completions with one touchdown pass for Houston (3-3), which got three catches for 38 yards and a score from Gerald McNeil.

"We're just having fun," said Gamblers running back Reggie Dupard after the triumph. "When we're having fun and playing well its hard for anyone to compete against us."

Ben Bennett threw for 178 yards with one touchdown and one fumble in defeat for Tampa Bay (1-5). He was also sacked twice in the tilt. Willie Gillespie caught seven passes for 72 yards and a score for the Bandits.

Houston broke a scoreless tie, when Weatherspoon rumbled into the endzone from six yards out with less than two minutes left in the opening period.

The Bandits then responded with two field goals in the second quarter and the teams headed into the intermission with Houston leading 7-6.

With 6:16 remaining in the third quarter, the Gamblers’ offense struck again, as Reggie Dupard made his way into the end zone via a one-yard plunge giving Houston a 14-6 lead.

Houston's defense was phenomenal in the second half, holding the Bandits without a single offensive point in the third quarter. The Gamblers added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and held on for a 28-12 triumph, handing the Bandits their fifth defeat of the season.

"The hardest thing to do is to continue to work hard all week but then failing to get results come game day. We have to just keep working and trying to get better," said Tampa head coach Jim Stanley after the game. "We have more than half the season left, so we just have to hold our heads high and move forward."

Game Notes;

Neither team registered a sack in the first half...The Bandits lost veteran lineman Ron Simmons in the first quarter, he did not return.
