Marcus Dupree for 82 yards on sixteen carries, and ran in the go-ahead touchdown with 18 seconds left, lifting the New Orleans Breakers to a 34-30 win over the Chicago Blitz.
Dupree had three touchdown runs overall, and quarterback John Fourcade finished with 191 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Breakers (1-1). Flip Johnson had six catches for 93 yards and one touchdown.
Mike Hohensee went 16-for-31 passing and accumulated 260 yards with no touchdowns and one interception as Chicago (1-1) lost its first game of the season.
Hart Lee Dykes caught four passes for 120 yards, while Mike Saunders ran for 124 yards and three touchdowns on 22 attempts.
The Blitz led 23-20 heading into the fourth quarter, but New Orleans quarterback John Fourcade then led the Breakers on a quick drive punctuated by a quick strike.
After a 10-yard pass to Buford Jordan brought the club up to the Chicago 18-yard line, Fourcade connected with Greg Scales for an 18-yard touchdown. Teddy Garcia converted the kick, making the score 27-23 in favor of the Breakers.
Chicago got the ball back and Mike Hohensee made passes of 23 yards, to Hart Lee Dykes and 27 yards to Mike Bellamy. A Mike Saunders three-yard run completed the drive, and moved the Blitz to a 34-30 lead with under ten minutes left in the game.
The teams then traded punts back and forth, then the Breakers took the ball with 1:12 minutes on the clock. John Fourcade then led the offense on a 74-yard game winning touchdown drive, culminating with a three-yard touchdown run by Marcus Dupree.
Game Notes;
Both teams committed just one turnover...Sammie Martin finished with 145 yards on returns...Mike Hohensee was sacked twice.
