Teddy Garcia nailed a 25 yard field goal in the extra frame and Marcus Dupree ran the ball 14 times for 91 yards in the New Orleans Breakers' 33-30 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Bandits.
John Fourcade completed 15-of-31 passes for 196 yards with one interception and two touchdowns. Lonzell Hill was his top target, catching five passes for 59 yards and Alton Alexis added two touchdowns for New Orleans (2-1), which won its first road game of the season.
Joe Dudek had 23 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown for Tampa Bay. Ben Bennett completed just 12-of-30 passes for 196 yards with one touchdown while Willie Gillespie hauled in four passes for 40 yards. Greg Boone also ran the ball fifteen times for 88 yards, scoring once.
Tampa Bay grabbed the early lead on a Obed Ariri 31-yard field goal with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter to make it 3-0. New Orleans responded with a touchdown strike from John Fourcade to Alton Alexis from 46-yards out to move the Breakers out to a 7-3 lead.
After another field goal from Ariri, Marcus Dupree ran one in from eleven yards out for a 14-9 advantage at the intermission. The lead grew to 17-9 midway through the third quarter after Garcia’s first field goal.
Ben Bennetts' first touchdown with 14:34 remaining in the fourth quarter pulled the Bandits to within one at 17-16.
New Orleans responded immediatley with a 96-yard kickoff return from former LSU star Sammy Martin pushing the Breakers back out to a seven point lead.
Trailing 23-16, the Bandits got the ball back with 14:21 remaining and took nine plays to go 81 yards capping the drive with a Greg Boone run score to tie things up at 23 each.
Tampa then scored the go-ahead touchdown after Joe Dudek capped a 55-yard drive with a one-yard scoring plunge, giving Tampa a 30-23 lead with just over three minutes remaining.
Alton Alexis scored on both of his receptions, after he found his way into the end zone again this time from 20 yards out to tie the game at 30-30 with just seventeen seconds remaining in regulation time.
Obed Ariri finished 3-for-3 on the day with field goals from 31, 39 and 42 yards, all coming in the first half. a long of 48 yards. Teddy Garcia was 2-for-2 for the Breakers, including the game-winner in overtime from 25 yards out.
Game Notes;
This is the first time league history that the league champions have started 0-3 the following season...New Orleans fullback Buford Jordan was knocked out of the game in the second quarter.
