Reggie Collier tossed two second-half touchdowns, as Memphis opened with a win on the road after a 27-26 tussle with the Houston Gamblers.
Collier completed 28-of-43 passes for 328 yards with an interception for the Showboats, who came over to Memphis after a trade during the off-season. Greg Anderson,who was also acquired in the same trade, caught eight passes for 116 yards, and Derek Crawford had seven receptions for 79 yards in the win.
Rookie David Klingler completed 18-of-27 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns for the Gamblers, who traded away veteran quarterback Todd Dillon after drafting Klingler out of the University of Houston.
Richard Johnson caught five balls for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while Reggie Dupard rushed for 48 yards on a dozen carries in the loss.
Leading 13-10 at halftime, Houston expanded their lead after a David Klingler touchdown pass to Richard Johnson from 13-yards out.
Memphis kept the score close, 20-17, after a 24-yard touchdown pass from Collier to Greg Anderson with 5:32 left in the third quarter.
About three minutes later, the Gamblers scored again, on a 55-yard strike from Klingler to Johnson with 2:43 left in the third. A failed extra point made the score 26-17 in favor of Houston.
Memphis got on the scoreboard again with 9:31 remaining in the final quarter when Ian Howfield hit on a 29-yard field goal to move Memphis to within six.
The final score of the game came when Collier hooked up with Joey Hackett on a five-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock after a sixteen-play 91 yard drive. Ian Howfield then nailed the extra point for a one point victory.

Chuck Webb led all rushers with 58 yards on fifteen carries...David Klingler finished with a passer rating of 140.5 in his pro debut.
